How the calculator splits tax and tip

For an even split, add tax and tip to the receipt subtotal, then divide by the number of people. A $120 subtotal, $10.20 tax and a 20% tip before tax ($24.00) come to $154.20, or $38.55 each for four people.

Your share = (subtotal + tax + tip) ÷ number of people

The shares are allocated in whole cents so they add up to the bill exactly. Choose Split a final total when tax and gratuity are already included. For shared dishes eaten in different portions, see how to split a restaurant bill.

Splitting tax and tip when people ordered different amounts

In an itemized split, tax and tip follow each person's share of the food. Someone who ordered a third of the food pays a third of the tax and tip.

Your total = your food + (tax + tip) × your food ÷ the bill subtotal

Split by items to scan a receipt and assign food, drinks and shared dishes. You can do it for everyone on one device, or invite friends to choose their items.

Questions about splitting a bill

How do you split a bill evenly with tax and tip?

Add the tax and tip to the subtotal, then divide by the number of people. A $120 subtotal with 8.5% tax ($10.20) and a 20% tip ($24.00) comes to $154.20, or $38.55 each for four people.

Should you tip before or after tax?

Many people in the US tip on the subtotal before tax, because tax is not part of the service. Some card readers suggest tips on the total including tax, which adds a little more. On a $120 subtotal with 8.5% tax, a 20% tip is $24.00 before tax or $26.04 after tax. The calculator can do either.

How do you split a bill when people ordered different amounts?

Use Split by items to scan your receipt and assign each person’s items. Tax and tip are shared in proportion: your share is your subtotal divided by the bill subtotal, times the tax and tip. With $30, $50 and $20 orders, 10% tax and a 20% tip, the three people pay $39.00, $65.00 and $26.00.

How do you split shared appetizers or a bottle of wine?

Use Split by items and assign a shared dish to the people who had it. Equal portions divide its cost evenly among those people before tax and tip. A $15 appetizer shared by three people adds $5.00 to each person's food subtotal.

Why does one person pay a cent more?

Some totals cannot be divided into whole cents. $100 split three ways is $33.333… each, so one person pays $33.34 and two pay $33.33. The shares always add up to the bill exactly, and nobody is more than a cent away from their exact share.

What if the tip or service charge is already included?

Check the receipt for a gratuity or service charge line. If all charges are already included, choose Split a final total and enter that amount. The calculator divides it without adding tax or another tip. For itemized service charges or an extra tip on top, use Split by items to review the receipt charges separately.
