ShareTheTab

Compare bill splitting apps: scanning, cost and guest access

For one dinner, check whether the app reads receipt items and lets friends choose their own shares. For a trip or household, also check running balances and currencies. The organizer's setup and each guest's requirements can differ.

Researched by the ShareTheTab developer. Official sources checked September 7, 2026. Features can vary by platform and region.

Does everyone need to download an app or pay?

One person can record costs for others without everyone participating. Joining to view or edit a shared bill is a separate step. Here is what that means for each product.

Receipt scanning, photo attachments and cost

ShareTheTab includes AI receipt item extraction for free. A receipt photo attachment only stores an image; OCR turns the image into editable text and amounts.

  • Splitwise lists receipt scanning and itemization under Pro. Only the person using that feature needs Pro access; other group members can see the expense. Pro feature rules.
  • Tricount lets you store receipt photos for reference and set each person's share of an expense. Tricount receipt features.
  • Splitser lets you attach a receipt photo to an expense and divide the amount using shares or exact amounts. Splitser expense entry.

Check the scanner's plan before starting. A free download does not mean every feature is free, and a paid scanning feature does not mean every guest must subscribe.

At the table: different orders and shared dishes

ShareTheTab scans receipt items and calculates shared portions, tax and tip. One organizer can add people, assign items and confirm everyone's selections on one device. Or share a browser invitation so friends can split together in real time. Live participation is optional. It is free, with no accounts; payments happen outside the app.

How receipt splitting works

Splitwise: itemization and an ongoing expense ledger

What should I check before switching bill splitting apps?

User discussions raise concerns about free-entry limits, subscriptions and access to past expenses. See these Splitwise subscription experiences and this household expense discussion. These are individual reports, not a survey or proof of current product behavior.

  • Check both the organizer's costs and what each guest needs to do.
  • For a busy trip, check daily entry limits. Splitwise's current Pro guide lists four free expenses per day.
  • For long-term records, check exports and recovery. ShareTheTab has browser-local history, no ledger import or currency conversion, and a six-month cloud retention policy.

For a single restaurant receipt, ShareTheTab lets the table claim items without accounts. For ongoing balances, compare the expense trackers above. You can manually record ShareTheTab's totals in another tool; there is no automatic integration.
