ShareTheTab

A free Splitwise alternative for restaurant bills

ShareTheTab includes free receipt scanning in a browser. One organizer can split for the whole table, or invite friends to select items in real time. No one needs an account or app download. Splitwise also handles itemized bills and keeps ongoing group balances.

Both can divide a bill by item

Splitwise supports item assignments, tax, tip and discounts, plus equal splits, exact amounts, percentages and shares. Splitwise split methods.

In ShareTheTab, scan and check the receipt, then assign items and relative portions for each person or let them choose. Review and confirm each person's selections before settling.

Is Splitwise receipt scanning free? Does everyone need Pro?

Splitwise lists receipt scanning and itemization as Pro features. The person scanning needs Pro access; other group members can view that expense without subscribing. Its current guide lists four free expense entries per day. Splitwise Pro rules.

ShareTheTab includes receipt item extraction for free. The organizer and guests pay nothing to split a receipt. Always check a scan against the original, whichever tool you use.

Does everyone need the Splitwise app or an account?

A download is optional: Splitwise works on the web too. Accounts let people view and edit shared expenses. An organizer can record expenses for invited friends before they accept, or add name-only placeholders through the web app. Those people need not participate. ShareTheTab also works with one person managing the bill. Use Add in the People row, then select each person to assign and confirm their items. Friends can optionally open the invitation in a browser and choose their name, with no signup.

How shared dishes and drinks work

A $24 pizza does not need to belong to one person. Four diners can each claim one share and receive $6 of its cost. If only two of them eat the fries, only those two select that item. An individual drink stays with the person who ordered it.

Tax and tip follow each person's food and drink subtotal. Only service charges have an equal/proportional choice. The itemized breakdown allocates rounding differences in cents; unclaimed items and their proportional fees remain unallocated.

Do you need to replace an existing expense ledger?

If your group already records rent, travel and reimbursements together, that ongoing history may be useful. ShareTheTab does not import Splitwise balances, combine expenses over time or convert currencies. My splits returns you to receipts saved in the same browser; it is not a replacement for an account-based ledger.

You can calculate a dinner with ShareTheTab and manually record the resulting amounts in the tool your group already uses. There is no automatic integration. For a single meal, you can simply review the totals and settle outside the app.

When ShareTheTab fits

  • Your table ordered different things and needs to divide shared food.
  • You want to handle the whole split yourself or let diners join in their browsers.
  • You need a receipt breakdown and will settle payment outside the app.

Keep Splitwise if its running balances fit your group. ShareTheTab does not replace that ledger. Its cloud bills are scheduled for deletion after six months, and browser history is not an account backup.
