A Tricount alternative for the receipt at dinner
ShareTheTab divides a restaurant receipt by item, with free AI scanning and no accounts. One person can do the whole split, or friends can join live in their browsers. Tricount tracks several shared expenses, including meals, across a trip.
One dinner or the whole trip?
Tricount describes a shared expense tracker with currency conversion, offline expense entry, receipt photo attachments and imports from Splitwise. Those tools address a broader trip budget. Its help center also documents uneven splits using individual amounts or shares. Tricount features; uneven expense splits.
ShareTheTab starts with the receipt’s individual items. Scan the receipt, review the extracted names and prices, then share an invitation. Each diner claims their items and a portion of shared dishes. Tax and tip follow each person’s item subtotal. The result is an itemized total for that meal.
How do people join a Tricount group?
One person can create a group and add participants by name. Friends join by opening the invitation link on their phone in the Tricount app. Joining instructions.
In ShareTheTab, the organizer can add people and assign and confirm their items on one device. Guests need nothing unless they want to participate. Then they open a browser invitation and choose their name.
Receipt photos and free expense tracking
Tricount offers free core expense tracking, receipt photos for reference and uneven splits with custom amounts for each person. Tricount's receipt features.
ShareTheTab turns the photo into editable items and amounts for free. Review the scan, then split each item by who had it. There is no subscription for the organizer or guests.
Example: dinner during a weekend away
Four friends share a $24 pizza. Bob and Dave also share $8 fries. Carol orders $18 pasta, Alice has a $6 lemonade, Bob has a $4 iced tea, and Dave has a $4 soda. Their item subtotals are $12, $14, $24 and $14.
With $5.12 tax and $12.80 tip, ShareTheTab works out totals of $15.36 for Alice, $17.92 for Bob, $30.72 for Carol and $17.92 for Dave. The four amounts add up to the $81.92 receipt. Nobody needs to divide the entire bill equally just because one person paid.
If your group keeps a trip ledger, you can manually record the dinner and those individual amounts there. ShareTheTab does not automatically send expenses to Tricount, convert currencies or combine the meal with hotel and taxi balances.
Which workflow fits?
- Use ShareTheTab to assign receipt items and see each person's tax and tip.
- Consider Tricount for a running expense record, currency conversion or offline entry.
- To use both, calculate dinner by item, then manually record it in the trip ledger.
If you need a permanent record, check export and recovery options before switching. ShareTheTab has no ledger import or export, and its cloud bills are scheduled for deletion after six months.
No accounts or app download are needed to use ShareTheTab. It is free to use; settle payment outside the app.
